| pashdown | Hello Josh |
| Josh- | hi there |
| Josh- | just wanted to say, i reeeaaally hope you win. :) |
| pashdown | There currently isn't a topic on the floor, so feel free to suggest one. |
| -:- Web926 [www-data@pashdown.org] has joined #pashdown | |
| pashdown | Thank you. |
| Web926 | what do you think about what happened in london this morning |
| pashdown | It was a tragedy |
| pashdown | I'd like to see more proactive approaches to terrorism rather than reactive. |
| Web926 | what do you suggest? |
| pashdown | However how to protect things like commuter trains which are boarded rapidly and all day long is a real hard problem. |
| pashdown | What I object to is some of the airport screening everyone has to go through. |
| pashdown | Like scanning the shoes after the shoe-bomber attack. |
| pashdown | If there was a toupee bomber, then they'd have to comb everyone's hair with a special comb. |
| pashdown | I think molecular sniffers are one approach that needs more research and development. |
| Web917 | What are molecular sniffers |
| pashdown | If you have been "swabbed" at an airport and then watched as they put the cloth into a machine, then you've seen one. They're looking for molecules of explosives. |
| Web926 | thats crazy, ive never heard of that |
| Web926 | are they afraid people will consume explosives? |
| pashdown | Supposedly if you've handled fireworks in the past 24 hours, those airport sniffers will go off. |
| pashdown | Not consume, handle. |
| Web926 | ok |
| Web917 | love technology! |
| Josh- | pashdown: do you plan on trying to fix some of the problems with the DMCA, perhaps proposing a newer, less awful version? |
| pashdown | Josh, I'd like to see the current version repealed or at least modified. |
| Web926 | so pete, tell us what youve been doing with yourself lately. i know you from a long time ago. i used to live with chris & jodi |
| Web926 | i think its great what your doing and keep it up |
| pashdown | My objections are focused on property rights of owners and reverse-engineering limitations. Plus the burden to ISPs being media companies' copyright police for free. |
| pashdown | Thank you Web926. |
| pashdown | I've been mainly shoring up support inside the Democratic party in case of a challenger, and putting in the early fund-raising structure. |
| Web926 | you seem to have slightly different views than the traditional democrat would you consider yourself a more liberal democrat? |
| pashdown | No, I'd consider myself more of a centrist democrat. My views on economics and fiscal issues are very conservative. |
| Josh- | this might be a bit ambitious, but do you think it would be possible to propose a constitutional amendment or something to clarify eminent domain as only being allowed for truly public purposes? |
| pashdown | One second, phone call. |
| -:- gthornock [~garyt@158.91.203.11] has joined #pashdown | |
| pashdown | Josh, I think a constitutional amendment would be a very difficult sell. I object to the supreme court decision on eminent domain though. |
| pashdown | Defining "truly public" would be the stretch. |
| Web926 | who do you think should take the next seat? |
| pashdown | I hope they can find someone who was as good as Sandra Day O'Connor. |
| pashdown | I think she took a very balanced, non-partisan approach to her work. |
| Josh- | it seems like the outrage at the decision is sufficient that an amendment might be an easier sell right now though, similar to how the patriot act was quickly passed. i was reading about hatch's new idea earlier today and it seems almost pointless. |
| Web926 | just like his "flag" issues |
| pashdown | Amendments to the constitution are much harder to do, as they require a super-majority and then the states have to also pass it with the super-majority. |
| Josh- | ya, i just like to dream big i guess. :) |
| Web926 | nothing wrong with that |
| pashdown | I think the eminent domain issue is going to have to really boil over for that to happen. Right now, there are states like Texas, and I think Utah is going to do this that are writing state laws to control eminent domain. |
| pashdown | That ability was left open by the supreme court. |
| Web917 | As a business man are you pro-wallmart? |
| Josh- | i think utah already limits eminent domain to "public purposes" only, but im not sure, and i just feel bad for those people in CT. |
| pashdown | I'm Pro-Costco because I think they care about their workers in a way Walmart doesn't. |
| [innards] | can we expect to see collaborations with moveon or other online entities for your campaign? |
| Josh- | costco takes very good care of their employees. i just hate how they don't have any grocery bags, heh. |
| pashdown | Re: Moveon, I doubt it as they most likely have the same assessment as the national Democrats have of this race. That its impossible. |
| Josh- | jeez, associating with moveon might turn off a lot of conservatives in utah who normally vote republican but who may be displeased enough with hatch to consider pashdown |
| pashdown | My objection to moveon sources to their poor email subscription policy. |
| pashdown | I've tried to communicate with them about it, but I think they're more interested in number boosting than happy subscribers. |
| Josh- | anyone who is remotely liberal in utah will already be voting for you, the tough part is going to be getting enough conservatives in the state to see things your way. |
| pashdown | Josh, my hope is that Utah voters can look past labels and see a fellow Utahn who has been a part of this state's business community for over a decade. |
| Josh- | pashdown: what are your views on gun control, medical/legalized marijuana, and the iraq war? |
| pashdown | Josh, I wouldn't advocate any further gun control. |
| pashdown | I think medical marijuana is a state's decision, and right now meth is a far bigger problem that is not being addressed. |

| pashdown | I think if the troops in Iraq feel they are making progress then that is the best measure. Washington should listen to the military and give them what they need for success and not the other way around. |
| pashdown | I think it is also important that Washington support our veterans and families who have lost members due to war much more heavily than what is going on now. |
| Josh- | thats pretty much what i was hoping to hear, thank you. |
| pashdown | Hearing stories about families on foodstamps and veterans unable to get medical care makes me utterly ashamed. |
| Josh- | i think the fact that matheson keeps winning, even after the gerrymandering, is a good sign that you have a fighting chance. i dont think hatch is as invincible as many seem to believe. |
| Josh- | yes, that disturbs me as well. |
| Josh- | i think all military personnel deserve decent pay and benefits. |
| pashdown | Hear hear. |
| Josh- | no troops should be on foodstamps, especially if they have families. |
| Web926 | no one should be on food stamps period |
| Web926 | everybody deserves bettter |
| pashdown | I agree. |
| pashdown | However, I fear that China and India will be eating our lunch very soon unless we turn around education in the U.S. |
| Web926 | education in america has gone down the toilet. college degrees ore the new high school diploma |
| pashdown | I was inspired to enter the sciences by the moon shot. Right now I have a hard time seeing anything that is inspiring our children to do the same. |
| Josh- | kids in japan, india, and many other countries wipe the floor with our kids academically, and there wont be an easy way to change that, especially when so many of our schools are more like prisons than schools. |
| Web926 | i think parents arent as involved as they used to be. everybody works to much to get more "stuff" and their families suffer, so sad |
| pashdown | Josh, I think dividing schools into different tracks is one idea. Right now, the same school that teaches ESL to a refugee is expected to teach algebra to a native. |
| Josh- | the problems are many, you have teachers that are paid only slightly more than people at taco bell, state legislators who waste time trying to get creationism taught in science class, 45 kids in each classroom, etc. |
| pashdown | Yes, and NCLB micromanaging the entire nation. |
| Web926 | ahhhh micromanegement, the fall of the american empire. |
| Web917 | I'm sorry I have to leave, I wish I could post more questions but I am at work and need to leave for a meeting, I will be back next week. Thank you for bringing your campaign online! |
| pashdown | You're welcome. Thanks for your time. |
| Josh- | i think that pushing for private schools is the wrong answer too, not enough people will be able to afford them. the only thing to do is throw a lot of money at the problem and drastically revamp our whole education system, but that wouldnt be a popular solution. its like social security, there really is no way to fix it without angering a lot of people. |
| pashdown | The Department of Education should be a vehicle for promoting success stories in schools instead of enforcing one-size-fits-all. |

| pashdown | There are steps to be taken towards revamping any of these big government programs, but more often than not, I feel even those steps aren't being taken. |
| pashdown | I learned this weekend that it is easier and cheaper to put an experiment on the Russian side of the Space Station than it is on the U.S. |
| Josh- | they arent. not enough people want those steps to be taken, even here in utah, you see letters to the editor in the sltrib and the dnews all the time complaining that teachers are OVERpaid and they should quit whining. |
| pashdown | So most U.S. research happens on the Russian side for this reason. |
| Web926 | do you know why its cheaper? |
| pashdown | Josh, usually the extremes are the most vocal though. |
| pashdown | Web926, all the red-tape and requirements that NASA needs. |
| pashdown | Because the Russians had a painful overhaul of the entire country, they're missing the red-tape. |
| Josh- | they dont have as many lawyers as we do. :P |
| pashdown | I wonder how many other government agencies are calcified to the point of uselessness. |
| Web926 | maybe we need something painful to wake us up |
| pashdown | BRB, pizza guy at the door. |
| Josh- | ok, i wont keep you from enjoying the pizza then. thank you for being so accessible. if every politician chatted openly and honestly with people on irc, this country would be 1000x times better. :) Good night. |
| pashdown | Web926, I hope it doesn't come to that. |

| pashdown | Josh, thanks. I would absolutely keep doing this if elected. |
| Web926 | if people were more educated it wouldnt |
| pashdown | Any other questions? |
| pashdown | If people were more educated, what wouldn't? |
| gthornock | I'm not sure the wakeup call needs to be painful, but we do need something. Maybe something like the race to the moon, that would engage the interest and the imagination of the country. |
| pashdown | Yes, I believe that firmly. |
| -:- SignOff jasongates: #pashdown (Ping timeout: 198 seconds) | |
| pashdown | Nanotech research and/or maybe the space elevator. |
| Web926 | yes but are there alterier motives for the race to the moon? |
| pashdown | I think the moon provides two opportunities for the future. |
| pashdown | One, it is rich with fuel that can be used in fusion reactors. |

| pashdown | Two, it has a steady supply of sunlight without clouds or weather. It would make a terrific solar collector. |
| pashdown | Bye |
